Transcript & Key takeaways from the episode:

  • People are interested in the specific app for the same reason whether they have iOS or Android.

  • But when it comes to App Store Optimisation it might be more efficient to avoid doing exactly the same on iOS and Android, because these 2 stores' algorithms for ASO parts like keyword research, visibility with featuring or creative layout behave very differently because the UX in App Store and Google Play Store is not the same.

  • Users might not think differently but you shall think about different UX experiences for these 2 stores and not only about the users.

George: I want to discuss the topic of App Store Optimisation. We had a constant debate about: whether iOS and Android users’ behaviour is the same or not? What is your opinion and expertise on that?

Simon: My opinion is that people get it a bit mixed because in terms of user behaviour I don’t have any specific insights to say that is not the same or are the same. I think it seems pretty obvious that people in the end are interested in your app for the same reason whether they have iOS or Android. But when it comes to ASO we usually say don’t do exactly the same on iOS and Android, because the store algorithm for anything like keyword research or visibility with featuring behaves very differently. And more important thing when it comes to creatives, because usually it is like don’t do the same creatives on iOS and Android because people don’t want the same things that might be true to a certain extent, but there's no way to know. What is certain, however, is that the UX in both, two stores is not the same and so, on iOS if you're searching for an app, you will see the screenshots no matter what, on Google Play you only see them only when you get to the app store page. And also the way the screenshots are shown on Google play, it does the fixed height as the percentage of the screen size and so you can have between 3-4 portrait screenshots that are shown on Google Play, but on iOS where you are on a store page, you're just gonna see about 1.5 screenshots if we are talking about portrait screen. Because that’s why it is really important to say that users might not think differently but you shall think about the UX experience and not only about the users.

George: ok. Cool, man. So you think that based on your experience the UX is different because of layout and also some stuff that is limited to one store vs another.

Simon: Yeah, absolutely. It's like stores have different rules and you need to play with the rules you are given.
