Why Onboarding Is Even More Important Than the Paywall
Onboarding builds value perception before users ever see the paywall.
Strong onboarding reduces price resistance by making users feel the product is worth paying for.
Without onboarding, users question the value, not just the price.
Subscription apps depend on onboarding to show how the product fits into users' lives.
Focus on selling the value first, just like in any real-world sales conversation.
George: Why onboarding is even more important than the paywall during the process of getting money out of customers?
Léa: Great question. I think it's a bit of a controversial question because, obviously, when you're thinking monetization you think, like pricing, you can paywall, you think like design, placement, that kind of thing. And it's also super important that realistically your onboarding happens before the paywall. And your onboarding is almost all only exist, so you can build the value perception. So people can understand the real value that your product provide them. And that by the time they come to the paywall, they don't surprise, they're not questioning, is this worth it? They just questioning the cost and finding easy cost versus the value. But if you haven't built that value before they see the paywall, when are they going to question, right? Like, I'm gonna give you money for free.
And so you can do it with a product experience, but in subscription app you should do it with an onboarding flow. And so that's really, really important. You need to optimize onboarding flow to build that value perception. So really, by the time I get to the payroll, my value perceptions really, really high. So my cost since, like my cost sensitivities, a little bit lower. And I understand that, you know, I understand the transaction, that's about to happen. I understand what I'm getting for my money. And I think to do that, you gotta focus onboarding. Like that's where you have to focus on.
George: Got it. Yeah. So like as as many developers are thinking that, okay, this is like, the paywaal is the the most important stuff. No, it's not. Actually, the onboarding is where the people are convinced to pay. Correct?
Léa: Yes. You need to build the value. You're onboarding is like a subsflow. If you are talking to someone or if you buying something you're not just gonna go straight like how much it costs. First you want to know what is it, what is it for you? How is it gonna help you? How is it going to fit in your life? How is it going to deliver what your job is? And then you can find out how much is worth and if it's worth it, right? Okay. But first build the value.
